ABOUT THE PA'S FIDDLE PROJECT

Vanderbilt University Musicologist Dale Cockrell’s son Sam was eight when the two of them began reading the Little House books together at bedtime. As they read along and came upon songs that Dale knew, he would sing them and Sam often joined in. Yet there were still many tunes Dale didn’t know. Both Sam and Dale wanted to know all the music, for the singing was always fun and the stories seemed incomplete without the soundtrack. Out of a bedtime ritual thus was born The Pa’s Fiddle Project, dedicated to re-voicing the 127 songs embedded in the Little House books and making this great American music available once more to all to enjoy.

After a chance meeting with Dale Cockrell in the summer of 2010 I became fascinated with The Pa’s Fiddle Project, which added depth and understanding to my 36-year association with the Little House TV series and the Wilder books. In June of 2012 Dale and I collaborated to help produce a PBS pledge special appropriately entitled Pa’s Fiddle: The Music of America.

To date, The Pa’s Fiddle Project has released three CDs – Arkansas Traveler, Happy Land and Pa’s Fiddle Charles Ingalls, American Fiddler.
The mission of The Pa's Fiddle Project is to re-connect generations of readers with the rich musical legacy written into the Little House books.

In March of 2015 Dale passed the reins of The Pa’s Fiddle Project to me and it is with great anticipation that I set out to continue the work that Dale so ably began.
